Kohi Campers offers one way rentals between Auckland and Christchurch, giving you the flexibility to start your trip in one city and finish in the other. It is one of the best ways to experience New Zealand — fly in, pick up, drive the length of the country, and fly home from the other end.
A one way rental works exactly like a standard rental except your pickup and drop off locations are different. You collect the vehicle in either Auckland or Christchurch and return it in the other city at the end of your trip.
One way rentals must be arranged and confirmed with the team before booking. Do not select different pickup and drop off locations without speaking to us first as logistics need to be confirmed in advance.
Both routes require the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing between Wellington and Picton. This is one of the great experiences of a New Zealand road trip in its own right — the Marlborough Sounds entrance on the Picton side is spectacular.
The Cook Strait ferry crossing between Wellington and Picton is an essential part of any one way trip between the North and South Islands. There are two operators running the crossing:
The crossing takes approximately three hours on the Interislander and around three and a half hours on Bluebridge. Both operators carry vehicles and passengers.
Ferry bookings are the responsibility of the renter and are not included in the rental cost. Book your ferry crossing as early as possible, particularly for summer travel and school holiday periods when sailings fill up weeks or months in advance.
This is the classic New Zealand road trip direction. Start in Auckland, head north to the Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga, come back south through the Coromandel, drive to Wellington, cross the Cook Strait to Picton, explore the Marlborough Sounds, drive the West Coast via Punakaiki and the glaciers, and finish in Christchurch via Arthur's Pass or through Queenstown and Mount Cook.
Pick up in Christchurch and head straight to Mount Cook and the Mackenzie Basin, then west to the glaciers and down the West Coast. Cross to Queenstown via the Haast Pass, explore Central Otago, drive north through Marlborough and across the Cook Strait to Wellington, then work your way up the North Island through the Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay, and Taupo before finishing in Auckland.
A one way fee applies to cover the cost of repositioning the vehicle between cities.

Yes. Ferry bookings are your responsibility and are not included in the rental cost. Book directly with Interislander or Bluebridge as early as possible.
Cook Strait sailings can be delayed or cancelled in poor weather. If your sailing is affected, contact us as soon as possible so we can adjust your rental period if needed. Ferry delays are outside our control but we will do everything we can to accommodate changes to your schedule.
Yes. The Ranger and camper combination is carried as a standard vehicle on the ferry. You will need to provide vehicle dimensions when booking. Passengers travel in the passenger decks during the crossing and are not permitted to access vehicles on the car deck while at sea.
Yes. A one way repositioning fee applies. $300.
